Kelsey Park, with its lakes, variety of wildlife, flower beds, spectacular herbaceous border and over 100 kinds of trees, is the jewel in Bromley’s crown. It is a haven for wildlife and over 65 species of birds have been recorded, (see the Wildlife sightings and Photo Gallery pages). There is a heronry on the larger island where over 25 pairs of grey herons successfully nest each year. As Heron island is located about 100 feet from one bank and 50 feet from the opposite bank, it is probably the easiest place to see nesting herons in the south east of England.

The park’s lawns are ideal for picnics and sunbathing (ball games and dog walking are only allowed on the cafe and playground side of the lakes). The level paths provide easy access for the elderly and disabled. There is a well equipped and very popular children’s playground with a big climbing net and slide tunnel.

There is a café and the toilets have baby changing facilities. One toilet is for the disabled which is accessible with a radar key, (provided by the café).

Other facilities include a mini golf course (contact Maria on 07981 822364) and tennis courts.

The Information Centre, open weekend afternoons and staffed entirely by volunteers, is the best next stop to learning more, apart from simply going on a self-discovery walk. It can be found on the ‘Location’ page map.

The Friends campaign and work tirelessly to bring about improvements to maintain the park for all visitors, scoring recent notable successes, such as refurbishing Heron Island and the Rockery by the waterfall.

January

Six swans are now on the main lake, with a lot of chasing, ‘attacking’ and flying going on. The attacking swans are the parents who try to move their younger ones on, away from ‘their’ park, a typical swan behaviour.

A couple of new ducks have been spotted. One looks like another Khaki Campbell and the other looks like a Buff Orpington. More than likely they are domestics resulting from breeding with Indian Runner Ducks. These two photographs (left and centre) by John Burn.

A rare sighting of a sparrowhawk (right), on Tuesday 17th, high up on a tree right beside a Manor Way entrance (the next one 200 yards more northerly of the pillar post box entrance.) Although near the top of a high tree Nick Baelz managed to take this challenging photograph.

More and larger version photographs and details on the Wildlife sightings page.
